The cheapest alternative is often search engine optimization, because you can do much of this yourself and you don't need to keep paying for results. If you're thinking about buying traffic, you should consider pay-per-click advertising, in which you pay only for those visitors who click on the advertisement (and not all the people who supplosedly sees it but never clicks through to your site).
