When we discuss visibility on search engines, we are talking about visibility on organic searches as opposed to paid listings. This kind of visibility assures you ready access to a great amount of traffic at no cost.

A great number of companies sell search engine optimization - some of them are serious, others will do things on your behalf that put you at risk of being excluded from the search engine (or pulled so far down in the list of hits that the effect is the same). If you choose an external SEO-partner, make sure that your provider does work that is in line with, for example, Google's guidelines.

Fundamental search engine optimization is something you can do yourself. If you currently have poor digital visibility, a little work on your part can be enough to improve your placement significantly - perhaps even a first page placement. It depends on how much competition you face.
