Starting up a New Web Site

When you are going to start up a brand new web-site, there are many things to think about. Here are a few of them.

Starting up an entirely new web-site from the ground up is one of the most exciting processes a web editor can work on. You have a clean slate and a whole workshop full of tools; for once, you are free to execute a thorough and correct start-up process.

I would argue that it is most important to start at the right end: The right questions. In 1996, I put together a document I called "The To-Do List" - good questions that must be answered BEFORE you start developing the web-site. Years later, I've heard this same list quoted straight back at me, and it is now found in numerous variations. You will find my own latest version right here. And you will find a tutorial taken from a lecture that I have given countless times called "Strategic choices when developing a web-site".

The Big Picture - Strategic choices when developing a web-site - free tutorial (PowerPoint)

The To-Do List - what you need to think about before you develop a new web-site (word document)

After this strategic phase comes the more practical technical specifications and development phase. This is an extensive subject covered in its own section on this web-site. You will find this section here:
